To this day, it is not known whether Cécile Renault truly intended to assassinate Robespierre. What is certain is that she wanted to visit him and behaved in a highly suspicious manner. She was arrested, and two small penknifes were found among her belongings. That was enough evidence for a death sentence in Prairial, Year II of the Republic. On the same day, an attack on Collot-d'Herbois was foiled. Both incidents gave the committees the perfect opportunity to set a public example. Randomly assembled suspects were convicted in a single trial and hauled to the scaffold – all dressed in the red shirt of murderers. They had dared to attack the fathers of the people. A total of 54 people were guillotined. The mass execution took only 28 minutes.
